Got Maskne? Here’s How to Treat (and Prevent) Mask-Induced Breakouts!
There is an actual term “maskne” that refers to the irritation and acne breakouts that can result from wearing a mask.
But the question is, what can we do to prevent this when wearing a mask seems to be the way of life now?!
Why do these breakouts and perioral rashes happen?
The medical term for “maskne” or the acne and irritation from your mask is acne mechanica. The problem is that face masks imposes heat, friction, and occlusion on the skin and then is combined with moisture from breathing, talking and/or sweating. This creates a perfect environment for breakouts! Your pores get clogged and can become pimples or acne cysts. On top of that, the prolonged occlusion, heat and sweat can cause the skin to become dry, red, itchy and raw.
How do you prevent mask irritation and breakouts?
1) Wash your face
Your face should always be clean before you put on a mask. This removes dirt and oil that can get trapped on the skin surface and contribute to breakouts.
Use either Nutriance Cleansing Milk (if you have sensitive skin) or Nutriance Cleansing Gel (if you have oilier skin or are prone to acne even without a mask).
2) Apply a moisturizer
Not only will this keep your skin hydrated, it will also act as a barrier between your face and your mask, reducing friction. Apply on your cleansed face before putting on your mask.
Nutriance Rejuvenating Rich Cream is perfect for this! It contains ceramides and hyaluronic acid, which will provide extra protection. And the marine botanical complex is a great anti-inflammatory and antioxidant bonus!
3) Don’t wear makeup
Makeup under your mask will only contribute to clogged pores and breakouts. And it also will get all over the inside of your mask!
3) Remember this quick trick!
If you have had your mask on for any long standing period of time (or if you can take a mask break at work). Take your mask off and tone, then moisturize. No water or time commitment needed!
Grab your Nutriance Tonic and apply around your nose and mouth. Then apply Nutriance Rejuvenating Rich Cream.
This will get rid of excess oil and dirt (with the Tonic), then replenish your skin barrier (with the Rejuvenating Rich Cream). A quick fix with big benefits!
4) Wash your mask (or change it frequently if it's disposable)
Constant use of the same mask without washing will create a breeding ground for bacteria from your nose and mouth. To avoid further irritation, choose a fragrance-free laundry soap and skip the fabric softener. I air dry mine so they do not shrink and will still hold their shape.
5) Stay away from irritating skin care products
Anything that may potentially irritate your skin can make the possibility of getting a rash or acne from your mask more likely.
Skin care products that contain benzoyl peroxide, retinols (like retin-A/tretinoin) and AHAs or BHAs (like salicylic acid or glycolic acid) will be more irritating to your skin under a mask. These can be products labeled as anti-aging or for acne-prone skin. If you are not sure if a product you are using could be contributing to your maskne, just ask your derm provider.
